Sonia DELAUNAY (1885 - 1979)

After a fawn period which Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin undoubtedly inspired her, she invented, with her second husband, a form of painting which Apollinaire defined by the term vague orphism, which did not correspond to any real trend. Sonia and Robert Delaunay mostly worked together on the search for pure color and the movement of simultaneous colors, a trend that inspired other painters after them, notably Fernand Léger and Jasper Johns.

Increasingly oriented towards abstract art over the years, in 1946 she created the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles only to promote abstraction.

She leaves behind an abundant work which also includes printed fabrics, artists' books, haute couture dresses including the famous Nancy Cunard dress.
