James COIGNARD (1925 - 2008)

James Coignard is a painter, ceramist, sculptor and engraver, was born in 1925 in Tours.
He had a brief 4 year career in administration.
At the age of 23, he discovered the landscapes of the Côte d´Azur, which made him want to take courses at the School of Decorative Arts in Nice.
His meeting with Paul Hervieu in 1950 will be decisive. His collaboration with the Hervieu gallery will make him known in the artistic world and abroad, especially in Scandinavian countries.

At the start of his career, he was designated by critics as belonging to the School of Paris and very quickly his painting and his ceramics were appreciated.
At the start of the 1960s he began to work with glass.

In 1986 his friend Henri Goetz discovered a new engraving process with carborundum, which made his technique evolve. Engraving then becomes central in his work. At the same time, his career took on an international dimension. He travels a lot, especially in Sweden and the United States where he will live for a few years.

In 1978 James Coignard began a long collaboration with the Pasnic engraving studio. In the 1980s, he lived between Paris and the French Riviera and was interested in artists' books and publishing issues. He now exhibits around the world and is recognized as one of the greatest painter-engravers of his time.

Until his death in 2008 he will continue to work in painting, sculpture and printmaking, producing a lot and leaving behind an immense body of work.
