William NICHOLSON (1872 - 1949)
Son of an industrialist, he first made a name for himself as a poster artist with his partner James Pryde, under the name J. W. Beggartsaffs, in the Art Nouveau style. At the same time, he published several now-famous books of celebrity and sports portraits, as well as other illustrations. From 1905 onwards, he devoted himself to painting, primarily still lifes. He was the father of Ben Nicholson, one of the masters of abstract art.
Twelve portraits, wood engravings, published in 1899 in London by Heinemann and in Paris by Henri Floury: H.M. Victoria, Prince of Wales; Sir Henry Irving; Justice Hawkins, Archbishop of Canterbury; W. E. Gladstone; Sarah Bernhardt; Lord Robert; James Whistler; Rudyard Kipling; Cecil Rhodes; and Prince Bismarck.
